FORT ATKINSON, WI –July 25, 2007 – The United Way of Jefferson & North Walworth Counties, announces that the organization will be “launching” its 2007 Community Campaign on Saturday August 25, 2007 at 12:00 Noon along the Fort Atkinson River Walk with a cardboard boat race on the Rock River. A free community lunch, provided by event sponsors Jones Dairy Farm and Fort HealthCare, will be provided to the first 200 spectators.

“Now entering its fourth year, the Cardboard Cup boat race has grown over the past three years and has proven to be a fun event that brings people together and raises awareness about our local United Way,” said Dan McCrea, United Way’s executive director.

Boats powered by one or two crew members and made entirely of cardboard and duct tape will race a straight a 150 yard course on the Rock River. Participants will be launching their cardboard boats from the edge of Fort Atkinson River Walk just to the West of the Legion Dugout. Boats will be timed and compete for first, second and third place trophies as well as a trophy for the “wonder that went down under.” There will also be a trophy awarded for the best decorated cardboard boat.

“Our United Way is really excited about this family event and looks forward to involving people from throughout our community. Individuals and teams are encouraged to enter the race,” said McCrea.

A complete registration packet that includes tips on cardboard boat building and construction, race rules, waiver and registration forms are available by calling the United Way office at 920.568.8880 or visiting www.ourunitedway.com. Due to safety requirements, advance registration is required. Tee shirts will also be available to those individuals and teams who enter the race.
